In addition to the various articles I've written under the name of T. Paine -- which spell out my viewpoint clearly -- I'd like to present the following rationale as a further basis for my declaration as an Independent Scientologist.

FAITH

Haydn James, aka "T Paine" (and Kitty)

I have not one shred of doubt that Scientology is a religion, never have had. To me the evidence is clear and unequivocal. Though we may not talk about it often, faith is a very important element in Scientology.

In the lecture SELF-DETERMINISM ON THE DYNAMICS, dated 23 October 1951 LRH points out that the 8th Dynamic is actually faith, when he says:

“… Because the eighth dynamic is faith. It is not even knowledge, and it is certainly not ARC or understanding. It is faith; it is a static, and in a complete static there is no understanding. The individual is taught ‘You have to understand things in life,’ so he goes ahead and tries to understand the eighth dynamic. But you can’t understand the eighth—that is faith! You accept it. You don’t try to wonder about it.”

People may gain faith from life experiences, visiting with holy men and in other ways I am sure, but other than Scientology, I know of no actual technology that is capable or restoring, repairing or creating a resurgence of faith in an individual -- which provides incredible certainty that nothing can strike them down or a feeling that everything is absolutely going to be alright or any other way one may wish to describe it.

In the above lecture, this is how LRH described it:

“There was a very interesting officer who sailed with Columbus. He was a dashing fellow; he did very dangerous things continually. One time Queen Isabella was sitting on the top of a turret and she was bored, so this fellow said, ‘Oh, you’re bored, Your Highness?’  And he stepped over the edge of the parapet onto a beam about six inches wide and about three hundred feet above the ground that was sticking out about twelve feet. He just walked it, turned around in a circle on the end of it—he was not any kind of a ballet dancer or anything—and walked back. Queen Isabella had fainted!

“Anyhow, this officer had a little picture of the Virgin Mary, and he always carried this picture of the Virgin Mary… Two or three years later we find this officer conducting an expedition on his own. He sailed the Atlantic. Knowing nothing about seamanship or anything else, he sailed the Atlantic and explored the coast of Cuba and there he set up a colony. We don’t hear of these wildcat adventures that went on during Columbus’s expedition because he squashed them. If you had asked this fellow how he stood on the subject of the eighth dynamic—the Supreme Being—he would have looked at you very blankly. He would have said, ‘Why, the Virgin Mary takes care of me; I get along all right. I don’t have to be afraid of anything. I don’t know what you’re talking about, because nothing can happen to me—nothing!’  And he acted that way. And to the end of this man’s career, nothing ever disturbed this. He did the most fantastic things imaginable. This fellow was running on pure faith.”

THE TRAP

So, if I believe Scientology to be a religion and that it possesses the only known techniques for restoring/maintaining faith in an individual, why you might ask have I left the Church of Scientology.

The answer is a simple one. Miscavige has caused Scientology to fall into the same trap that most religions fell into, at one time or another and it doesn’t look like it is going to climb out any time soon. Within the Church of Scientology the religion is no longer used to expand the 8th Dynamic for its members. Instead the 8th Dynamic is used by Miscavige to control people. It’s all inside out and back to front.

In the C of S today, if you don’t act a certain way, appear at a certain time and at a certain place or pay a certain amount of money you will be consigned to the cosmic scrap heap for the rest of all time. If you don’t toe the party line you could lose your eternity. If you don’t pay homage to Miscavige or if you have the audacity to speak your self-determined mind you will “lose your Bridge” — you may never get to do it — and you will descend into the deep, dark pit of pain and oblivion, or so you are told. Examples of this kind of thing are legion.

Look, these are ALL threats concerning your eternity. They are all attempts to control you using the leverage of your entire future track. You see, in Miscavige’s Church of Scientology, the 8th Dynamic is being used as a mechanism to CONTROL you on the 3rd Dynamic. And what you must understand about this is that rather than help you it is the exact way to DESTROY your 8th Dynamic and your sanity because such actions are utterly antipathetic towards FAITH.

In the very same taped lecture LRH explained it this way:

“Faith, however, is an automatic proposition, and the reason a person tries to think on the
subject is that people try to use it as a control mechanism. And what this individual is trying to do is understand what is trying to control him in his own race—and he blames it on God. People are trying to control his actions and cut down his self-determinism by using the threat and potential of God. He gets upset on this subject so he bypasses trying to understand, because he didn’t understand what people were trying to do to him. He turns around and starts ‘understanding’ on the subject of a Supreme Being—but he can’t do it! And the second he does, he will spin.

“The way you undo it is find out who was trying to control him with the eighth dynamic. What human being was trying to control him with the eighth dynamic? What human beings were associated with him on the subject of the eighth dynamic? Unburden his contest and conclusions with regard to these human beings and all of a sudden the eighth dynamic will go right on up and be in beautiful shape.

"How do you rehabilitate this? First, you probably have to reorient an individual with regard to other people—just anybody. Get him in contact with other people, and then finally carve it down to a point where you undo the efforts of other people to control him through a warping of the eighth dynamic."

And that’s why, sooner rather than later, Miscavige is going to have to be audited out. He is actively spinning people in using the 8th Dynamic to threaten and control them. It won't get any better, they will just spin in further -- the poor souls that don’t spot this mechanism will act more and more crazy.

And that's exactly what LRH states in the same tape when he talks about sanity and the 8th Dynamic:

“But there is faith as it can be used. The reason why it keeps coming downhill (this is very simple) is that people try to control others with it. This is awfully important, because a large percentage of the individuals who are neurotic or insane are neurotic or insane because of this eighth dynamic louse-up. So you can put that down as important.

“If you take a look at the Minnesota Multiphasic as an intelligence test, you will find that an enormous number of its questions apply to religious aberration. And you will find out that the people who got that together took it empirically from insane asylums. This was not somebody’s figure-out; this was all the kinds of questions that they assembled and found as the most common points of trouble. You will find that maybe 30, 40 or 50 percent of the insane are insane mainly because of the eighth dynamic.”

I cannot condone or support, in any way, what Miscavige has done to Scientology. By the very Code of a Scientologist the active reduction of people’s sanity is unsupportable and something that should be vigorously opposed by one and all.

Perhaps the insanity point is why we now instinctively refer to members of the Church as “Kool Aide drinkers”. Because just like the Kool Aide drinkers that went before them, they are no longer thinking sanely on the subject of their faith. But this is no flippant matter because it pains me greatly to think of the colossal damage that has been done. How many thousands upon thousands of ex Scientologists and ex staff have been driven half crazy by this stunt? A stunt as old as this universe I am sure. And how many sit out there in the back of beyond convinced their 8th Dynamic/faith is all shot to hell when it was really Miscavige’s insidious use of the 3rd Dynamic that did the damage?

PROOF OF THE PUDDING

This is not really a case of me leaving the Church of Scientology or declaring independence, the fact is that due to Miscavige's destructive actions my religion was lost to me a long time ago. I left the Church, not so much in protest but in an attempt to regain my religion and it has worked beyond my wildest dreams. Having come out from under the twisted suppression described above and having had a little auditing at Marty's place, I have experienced a serious resurgence in faith. I have not felt like this in many years, if ever — a feeling that nothing can strike me down and that it will ALL go right.

And if LRH says that you lose your dynamics in the sequence of 8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1. And if leaving the C of S and spending a few days with Marty has resulted in me regaining my 8th Dynamic, then imagine what it has done to my other 7 dynamics and you will begin to see the magnitude of the win.

But these types of wins are not limited to me. I know them to be common place for those who have left the Church.

NEW CIVILIZATION

And what about the goal of building a new civilization you might ask? Well, I have been a Scientologist for more than 34 years and staff for 31 of those. But that amount of time is merely a few ticks of the universal clock. This is hardly the first time an attempt has been made to build a new civilization; there have been many on the track. And I am sure we have shared many an attempt together. I'd certainly like to think so.

The C of S is not going to build a new civilization with people driven crazy on the 8th Dynamic; they will have the opposite effect and are well along in that process. So, I'll keep working at it with my real friends on the outside, my true partners in this venture. It has been a very long journey to date but the road is wide and clear ahead of us. And I have not the slightest doubt that everything is going to be absolutely alright!

Wow Haydn, that was very cool :-)

I could actually feel faith creeping through this jaded cynicism of mine.

A strange sensation.

Thanks RJ, you old cynic you!

Wow! Little did I know LRH had expounded so much on the subject of God. There's way more to it than I and many others over the years ever thought previously while still an active member. To me the idea was the "God dynamic" being "way out there" on the outermost edge of the concentric circle of dynamics.

Also, Haydn...is that a lioness you have as a pet in that pic of you and "Kitty"??!! What's up with that? LOL!!

Also, is there a book in you to write some day on your experiences and thoughts? Like Jeff Hawkins and Marc Headley have done?

Thanks for your courage and truth-filled tellings.

Dear Haydn,

Thanks a lot to LRH for that win and many thanks to you to pointing it out!

I call that shot "My Land Rover, the lioness and me". She is quite real and quite wild. Mr. M. Rinder took an amazing photo shot that makes it look like the 1 inch plate glass barrier is not there otherwise I would have looked comfortable not at all.

Haydn,

Thank you so much for being a very valuable part of the Independent Scientologyists. You are making a huge difference in getting Ethics in on Miscavige, OSA and what is left of the management.

# P. Henry 2009-11-28 16:27
Last night, for whatever the reason, I put the word Scientology into the search engine then clicked the magnifying glass. I began quickly turning the dial through the various stations (broadcasting pretty much the same ole, same ole) when I happened to tune into the frequency of this site. I came to an abrupt halt. This, for me, was a very different broadcast to be receiving! So...I received. I looked (still looking), I read (still reading) and I compared (still comparing) the information that I was inflowing to my personal experiences as a public Scientologist as well as a former staff member (two different orgs). And boy oh boy, did the dots start connecting up!

I met L. Ron Hubbard in late 77'. The meeting was not in the flesh it was through my reading DMSMH. From that point on my life has never been the same and I am eternally grateful to my dear friend and mentor, Ron Hubbard, for opening up so many doors for me. Doors that I had always suspected were there yet could not ever seem to find on my own. But, not only did he open up numerous doors for me to journey through, he also gave me an incredibly detailed map and diversity of workable tools/equipment with which to make my journey home a successful one. And from the time I first met Ron to the present, any doubts or reservations that I may have experienced have, in time, action and results...converted into higher levels of certainty with what this incredibly compassionate and caring Being has so freely made available for myself and all others that happen to be caught in the same banana boat as I am. He restored my faith!

Many years ago I was running a secular organization that delivered Ron's management tech to non-scn professional and nonprofessionals alike. I would eventually and inevitably, have individuals from my public reach for Ron's spiritual tech. So, when that time came with an individual and as I made arrangements for that person to go to an Org so as to get on their spiritual path, I would first have a little reality to reality talk with them. The R-fac I gave was something to this effect:

There is something that you need to keep in mind as you head out in this direction. What you need to realize that there is a Scientology organization, i.e. the Church of Scientology. There are Scientologists. And, there is Scientology (pure Scientology) as it is delineated by L. Ron Hubbard. These three; the church (the organization), the Scientologists and Scientology are NOT THE SAME. I assure you, that as you travel this path if, that is, you determine that it is a viable spiritual path for you to travel, you will experience disagreements and difficulties with both the organization and fellow Scientologists. But, that being noted, do not allow those experiences to in any way pervert your relationship with LRH or the body of technology that he has put there for us. This is very important. Also, you need to know that when you arrive at the church, the intensity of action is going to be markedly higher than it is here in this space. Note: what I was saying here but not in these words was: the staff members at the church will not tolerate your comm lag like we do here.

For the last nine years I have been on what I refer to as a "walkabout." In other words, I needed to be in a place, not disconnected from Scn orgs (kept a tether line attached) but outside the sphere of influence of Scn orgs and Scientologists. Note, this "walkabout" was not my original intent but the longer I was on the outside the experience evolved into this process of awakening to self. In other words, I began to get in comm with myself. What has occurred with me is a very long story. But, after reading what Haydn has written here and, more importantly for me, the LRH reference Haydn included; I finally got the words to describe what I have been experiencing...my FAITH has been being restored on a gradient. Indeed, I consider that I am more of a Scientologist (a TRUE Scientologist) now than I ever have been. And my certainty and confidence in the technologies that LRH put in place is at a highest ever level.

My experience in the last few years has been a subjective more than objective one. I haven't been self-auditing but I have been inspecting and evaluating my considerations, opinions and knowledge. In this time I have not been inspecting the Scn organization. It wasn't until I received the DVD of The Basics event that the red flags on the organization and in particular, COB, went up and have stayed up! That event was incredibly revealing and after watching it I carry many questions that have yet to be answered.

I am pleased to have found this group. However, I remain most cautious.

P. Henry.

Thank you for sharing your story and realizations regarding faith.

You are right, the LRH tape is the real point here and it's regrettable I had to add my comments to draw the comparison between what LRH stated and what Miscavige is doing. Unfortunately it was necessary.

Welcome to the website. Your caution is understood.

# P. Henry 2009-11-29 20:01
Haydn,

Thank you for the welcome and understanding.

I must say Haydn that I did not find your comments to the LRH lecture to be regrettable in the least. To the contrary, your comments and the comparisons that you drew between what Ron was pointing out and what DM has been doing was immensely helpful. Your adroit articulation, for me, greatly facilitated and expanded the scope of understanding regarding how faith is such an integral part in this continuing drama. It was not unfortunately necessary but rather necessarily fortunate. And I appreciate it.

# Thoughtful 2009-11-29 11:30
There's nothing wrong with being cautious. I personally spent 4 years decompressing and starting life over, and then another solid year I spent evaluating Scientology to understand what went wrong. When I realized nearly all of the red flags traced back to DM, I knew I had the Why: Scientology had been subverted by someone who was committing continuous overt acts in the name of Scientology, while in reality they had splintered off the entire organization and turned the whole of it into a squirrel group. And I knew the Who: Miscavige. Then I acted, decisively.

Take your time. What you're really doing is restoring your own personal integrity by shaking off various enforced realities and coming to grips with what you yourself have observed to be true.

In my humble opinion, once you do that, you are a true Scientologist. Because you will have triumphed over suppression and won back your own personal integrity.

And that, after all, is the Holy Grail everyone is looking for.

So congratulations, you're nearly there.

# P. Henry 2009-11-29 21:41
Thoughtful (good moniker - you are indeed thoughtful as well as a bit profound),

Yes, integrity, I'm finally coming around to actually understanding that concept. And I agree, I'm getting mine restored. Speaking of integrity, I believe that the first time I came upon that concept was when I read Henry David Thoreau's essay, On Civil Disobedience. What Henry put forth in this essay impinged markedly upon me. It was a time when the Vietnam war was hot and heavy and my being drafted was imminent. Prior to reading this essay I had concluded that if I received my draft papers and had to report that I would become one crazy Mf....ing soldier! (I had made the observation that the crazy ones survived). However, after reading ole Henry's essay I changed my mind. Instead, I decided that if I received my draft papers, I was moving to Canada. It was a matter of personal integrity!

If you haven't read the essay On Civil Disobedience in a while or if you have never read it at all, I suggest doing so. It is incredibly appropo for the current circumstances. Not only within Scientology but the world in general.

Thoughtful, you looked, you evaluated and you found the "Why." The more I read and the more I recall my personal experiences and compile them with what I'm learning, it is becoming increasingly apparent that DM is indeed the source of incredible perversion of Scn. But DM will pass as all bad and evil things and Beings pass. Maybe Scn will survive this and maybe it won't. If it does survive and how it survives is inevitably up to us (as it always has been). There is an enormity of negative on the table right now but negative can be converted into positive. So, that being said, there is another WHY that I have even more attention on and it's because this WHY has obviously not been found. Perhaps it hasn't even been looked for. IMHO I do not believe that we will ever break out of this common and predictable cycle of SPs coming into power unless we spot and handle this particular WHY.

Earlier today I was reading a blog on, Ask the Scientologist. The title of the blog was, Scientologists: What Went Wrong? Here is an excerpt:

"...all those thousands of trained Scientologists completely failed to stop Miscavige's crimes, abuse and destruction. Scientologists need to ask "Why?"

"Scientology failed in the most fundamental ways.

"And it will fail again, even under some “new leader”. Decades ago in Scientology, there were a lot more people who were better trained and had more power and more experience, and they failed to stop Miscavige and his disasters. What makes anyone think that things would be better today?

"According to Scientology, it is not the people that failed. Thousands of Scientologists have been trained in these Scientology technologies, some to the very highest levels. These people successfully completed their Scientology training. Graduates of Scientology courses are, by Scientology’s own claims, always able to apply the subject 100% successfully, 100% of the time. Scientology says that if they don’t, they will be found and corrected. By Scientology’s definition, all these Scientologists were exactly, correctly applying Scientology technology.

"And every single one of them failed to detect and stop David Miscavige.

"This is a significant failure of Scientology training. This is a fundamental failure of Scientology."

I disagree the author that this is a significant failure of Scn training. Instead I do not think that this was ever something that was addressed in Scn training. Something has been missed.

This is the WHY that I am very interested in. Did LRH miss it? Or...did he discover it and then it was somehow lost? In any case, it's not the DMs of the world that I am interested in although these beings do have a real propensity for showing up, doing their thing and facilitating the destructions of civilizations or, at least, sections of civilizations. The burning question now though is, "Why do we not spot these characters early on and handle them?"

I first came into Scn in 78' in Portland, Or. The Mission in Ptl was part of the mission network known as COSMOD (Church of Scn Mission of Davis) that was established by Martin Samuels. What I have been reading here in regards to what DM has been doing and how he manages is incredibly similar to how Martin ran things. It would seem that Martin and DM have much in common except for the scope of their operations and sphere of destructive influence. Martin rose in power, rode the wave then crashed and burned and COSMOD was dismantled. The same will happen with DM. But again, how do these SPs manage to go undetected and unhandled for so long? What exactly is it that is continually being missed?

# Thoughtful 2009-11-30 10:35
LRH suffered a series of strokes starting in 1975. Mistakes were made and he got into a bad position whereby David Miscavige became the gatekeeper of info flowing into LRH. Miscavige used that position to manipulate LRH by feeding him false reports. Nevertheless, LRH did not put DM in charge of anything. By a series of coups, DM took control. We have now set up a force that will monitor Scientology management from the outside on websites such as this one. We are bulldozing a path for transparency, accountability and integrity. The world has changed. Gone are the days when unethical corporations can victimize the individual, since the individual can stand up to them online, spraying his experience or observations to millions online within minutes of it happening. These are major forces at work. The world has changed (improved). The solution to future toxic personalities taking over Scientology is already in place and you are part of it. We, the people, are the new watchdogs of organized Scientology.

I'd like to respond to that statement, "what DM has been doing and how he manages is incredibly similar to how Martin ran things."

I was staff under Martin Samuels for several years, and saw nearly nothing in common with how DM runs things. I think his biggest "crime" was being far too successful. No mission holder that was, survived the infamous MH Conference intact. The most prosperous of them all had their missions taken away and looted.

You have to remember, the people responsible for Martin's SP declare were DM's very own Finance Police.

I'm glad to see you talking openly your opinions, like a normal citizen.

Ironic that official Scientologists are incapable of dialoguing in similar fashion like the independent Scientologists do on this site and on Marty's blog.

My feeling is that the freedom to speak and share opinions has to leak back from you independents back into the official movement.

My feeling, even though I am NOT a Scientologist any more (I am an atheist, materialist, faith to me is a whole long discussion not a point I want to take up now), my feelings now are I'd like to see the positive characteristics of you independent Scientologists somehow rubbing off on the official movement.

I sit here in Pittsburgh with a full load of the whole LRH kit and kabudle, since I received several full LRH libraries donated by ex FCCIs, since I've been on the internet drumming up people to step up and speak up, and I've tried to assist the NRM (New Religious Movement scholars) do some more in depth coverage of the movement.

I looked at the "Code of Scientologist", it sits on my breakfast table, and I contemplate what is the future for you Scientologists, per the Code LRH wrote for you.

I hope you guys figure it out.

I hope you have a positive impact on the scene.

Good luck, I always respected you and Lucy, Lucy was a great CMO person. She was one of the best natured CMO executives in Sea Org history.

You were an admirable leader/exec yourself Haydn.

Good luck to you.

Wonderful article! I quietly walked away a couple of years ago and discovered that "faith" is a subject most neglected in the church...even invalidated. I have been looking for references and I thank you for posting these quotes and the reference!
As I have not officially "resigned" and I am simply seen as "inactive", I still have many comm lines in the church. Interestingly, I have a few friends who have been discussing with me the subject of faith and God and the eight dymanmic...I think for some there maybe a sort of "lag" in the group where people are looking for that "faith".
My own search began a couple of years after extracting myself from total immursion in CofS life(as a very active public).
I am much happier being a Scientologist independently and exploring this subject of "faith" has brought me more understanding of the dynamics and many other things.
Thank you so much for this article!
Love,
Nic

Haydn, after reading your posts at Marty's I decided to have a look at T. Paine!!

Excellent article. So, you are not just an Administrator. You definitely had an impact on me with Faith! I really wanted to thank you for being back. For 10 years I have been very lonely. Of course I had my wife and children that I managed to have at the age of 40 but you know when losing your 8th dynamic... you said it all and LRH once again is HERE.

I mean the ARC I am feeling these days, the responsibility I have is due to getting back my religion. And here you are and here we all are and stronger we grow.

We will be in touch one way or another and thank you very much.

Hi,

Please excuse my so-so English. I am member of organization "Свободная Зона" (Free Zone) and am a lifelong Scientologist.

I did services at the C of S in mid 90s and noticed many out-tech being use, verbal battering and break down of PCs and constant high pressure tactics to buy buy buy. I saw much unhappiness and took me many years to get the courage (and get fed up enough) to leave. I have one of the largest collections of LRH materials in Russia, and have been working with the German Free Zone groups to continue on my bridge.

With your permission, I would like to translate this wonderful lecture, to make it available to fellow Scientologists outside the confines of C of S for Russian speaking Scientologists.

I can feel my 8th dynamic soaring, reviving the lower dynamics in the process!

THANK YOU!
ARC!

Climate of Fear - Reign of Terror

"Ever-increasing savage actions created a climate of fear. You could be screamed at, ridiculed, spat on, embarrassed, threatened ferociously or beaten.
